ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. -- In a contest in which no team led by more than six points, Gwynedd-Mercy had their three-game win streak come to an end in a close 64-62 loss at Elizabethtown Wednesday night in the Griffins first action of the new year.
Sophomore
Brandyn Wims (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) led all scorers with 19 points, which tied a career-high. Junior
Frank Champion (Northfield, N.J./Mainland) added 10 points and 13 rebounds for his third double-double on the season.
Five lead changes took place in the first half, as the Griffins (8-4) would lead by as much as five, early in the stanza. Freshman
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) would drain a three-pointer on the team's final possession of the period to give Gwynedd a 36-32 lead at the half. Each team shot exactly 35.9% (14-for-39) from the field.
In the second period, things were just as tight as again there were five lead changes and five ties. Just when each team looked to pull away, the momentum swung back in the other direction to keep the score close. After battling back from a six-point deficit with 8:49 left, the Griffins were able to knot the contest up at 62-62 with 1:43 left from a bucket from Wims.
The Blue Jays (4-7) were able to get to the free-throw line twice in the last 38 seconds of the game, where they would only make two attempts. They turned out to be the go-ahead points needed as GMC and Wims had a last-second shot that did not go, ending their win streak.
Joe Schwalm led E-Town with 17 points, hitting four of the team's eight treys on the night. Teammate Andrew Mantz chipped in 12 points and a game-high 16 caroms.
Knight dished out a team-high four assists. Senior
Dan DelConte (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) contributed 10 points.
GMC shot 33.3% (24-for-72) for the contest, but were 0-for-7 from downtown in the second half.
The Griffins will get back at it on Monday, January 9th when they travel to Scranton, Pa. to face off with Marywood in a CSAC matchup.
