BOX SCORE

RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy stretched their win streak to six games, defeating Cabrini College, 50-40, Wednesday night. Freshman Shea Wassel (North Wales, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic) recorded her first double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, both game-highs.  With the win the Griffins improve to 11-6 and 7-1 for sole possession of first place in the CSAC South Division.

Both teams fought through offensive struggles in the first half. The Griffins didn't make their first field goal until five minutes into the contest, where they trailed, 10-3.  Gwynedd-Mercy (11-6, 7-1 CSAC) was able to battle back and overcome the early deficit when Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa. / Ridley) knocked down a three pointer at the 8:43 mark to give Gwynedd a 17-16 lead.  After a Cabrini timeout, the Cavaliers sparked a 6-0 run to take a 22-19 lead.  The Griffins were able to force twelve Cabrini turnovers and get contributions from eight different GMC scorers in the first half to only trail the Cavaliers 24-23 at the half.

In the second half the Griffins turned up the defensive pressure, holding the Cavaliers without a field goal for the first six minutes and holding Cabrini to only 16 second-half points.  Gwynedd would pull away for good, using a 22-9 run and hit from 5-of-6 trips at the free-throw line to close out the game.

Senior Bryn Cotteta (Norristown, Pa. / Norristown) chipped in five points, five rebounds, six steals, and three assists.

Gwynedd shot a season-low 28.3% (17-of-60) from the field but hit on 13-of-22 free throws.  The Griffins held the Cavaliers to 25.4% (15-of-59) including a 5-for-28 stint in the second.

Both squads pulled down 50 rebounds apiece.  Sophomore Taylor Alston (North Wales, Pa. / North Penn) pulled down seven caroms and added four points for the Griffins.  Annie Rivituso pulled down eight rebounds for the Cavaliers (7-8, 5-3 CSAC).

Gwynedd will now return home Saturday to host Cedar Crest College in CSAC action in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
