Men's Basketball Comes Up Short At Nationally Ranked Cabrini

RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy battled but fell at nationally ranked Cabrini College Wednesday evening, 78-73. 

The Griffins were led by senior Dan DelConte (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon) who was one of four Griffins in double figures, scoring a game-high fifteen points and pulling down six rebounds with three assists.

Cory Lemons was one assist shy of a triple double, totaling 12 points, 10 caroms, and nine helpers for the #10-ranked (d3hoops.com) Cavaliers.

The first half saw five lead changes and four ties.  A DelConte three-pointer put Gwynedd (10-6, 5-4 CSAC) up 13-8 early at the 14:28 mark.  The Griffins used another 5-0 spurt with Brandon Sharp (Hammonton, N.J. / St. Joseph's) connecting on a three point play to take a 21-16 lead.  Cabrini started to claw back in the game with a 7-0 run to take a 29-27 lead with a Fran Rafferty jumper with just over five minutes remaining in the half.  The Griffins would regain their final lead of the half on a Brian Reid (Philadelphia, Pa. / Mastery Charter) turnaround layup for a 34-33 edge.  Cabrini used a 9-2 run to close out the half with Jeremy Knowles knocking down a trey with three ticks showing, putting the Cavaliers up 42-36 heading into intermission.

Gwynedd would use a 11-3 run in the second half with Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J. / Oakcrest) contributing seven points in that stretch, including a big three-pointer to give the Griffins a 55-53 lead at the 13:32 mark.  The Cavaliers (15-1, 10-0 CSAC) would answer with an 11-0 run capped off by an Aaron Walton-Moss layup to put Cabrini up, 64-56, with just under ten minutes remaining.

After a timeout, the Griffins responded with a no doubt attitude that contributed to a 9-2 run to claw back within one 66-65 with 7:55 left.  Rafferty used a put back layup to keep Cabrini ahead by three until a Sharp jumper cut the deficit to one again with the lead 72-71 in favor of the Cavaliers.  Rafferty hit a dagger as he connected on a three ball from the corner to expand the lead to four 75-71 with 1:26 left.  Cabrini would be able to manage the clock and connect on crucial free throws down the stretch the secure the victory.

The Griffins shot 39.3% (24-0f-61) for the game, knocking down seven three pointers and making 18-of-23 from the charity stripe.  Frank Champion (Northfield, N.J. / Mainland) and Doug Berzins (Royersford, Pa. / Spring-Ford) added 14 and 10 points respectively for Gwynedd. Champion also added two blocks and two steals.

Cabrini hit for a 44.8% (30-of-67) shooting clip, draining seven treys as well. The Cavaliers were led by Goran Dulac who scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds.  Knowles added 12 points off the bench and A.J. Williams contributed 11.

Cabrini outrebounded Gwynedd, 44-40.  Sharp pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Griffins and added 10 points. 

Gwynedd will continue on the road as they travel Saturday to Rosemont in a CSAC matchup for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
