IMMACULATA, PA. – Senior
Dan DelConte (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon) scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the second half Monday night to lead the Griffins an 80-71 CSAC victory over host Immaculata University.
DelConte went a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line and also dished out four assists.
The Griffins (10-5, 5-3 CSAC) got off to a slow start, as Immaculata jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead just over five minutes into the contest. After a Gwynedd timeout and a few key substitutions, the Griffins responded in a big way, countering with a 32-13 run to close out the half. Gwynedd used contributions from nine different scorers in the stanza to shoot a blazing 51.6% from the floor and with their defensive intensity, GM forced nine Immaculata turnovers in the period to take a 38-28 into the break.
The second half is when DelConte and the Griffins were able to build their largest lead (61-48) on a
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J. / Oakcrest) three pointer. Immaculata would battle and cut the lead down to three 74-71in the late stages of the game. However the Griffins would go a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line to close it out.
For the game, the Griffins shot 45% (27-of-60) and knocked down four three pointers and hit on 22-of-29 free throw attempts. Knight contributed 15 points off the bench and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Gwynedd took tremendous care of the basketball only committing six team turnovers while forcing Immaculata to commit fifteen.
The Mighty Macs were 44.4% (24-of-54) from the floor as they sank ten three pointers and made thirteen free throws. T.J. Klinger led Immaculata with 18 points who also had four other players contribute with double-digit efforts.
Gwynedd outrebounded Immaculata, 36-35. Senior forward
Brandon Sharp (Hammonton, N.J. / St. Joseph's) pulled down four rebounds and added twelve points. Brandon Smith grabbed 12 caroms and contributed eleven points for the Mighty Macs.
The Griffins now travel Wednesday to nationally ranked Cabrini Wednesday night for a scheduled 8 p.m. tip-off following the women's contest.
