GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Senior
Kristy McGrath (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) netted her 1,000th-career point to highlight Gwynedd-Mercy's 61-47 win over Baptist Bible in the first round of the CSAC Tournament Monday night.
The fourth-seeded Griffins had to overcome a sluggish offense and an early deficit to move on to the semifinal round.
After trailing by 10 with 10:59 left in the first half, Gwynedd (17-9) found their shooting stroke tearing off a 26-7 run to take a nine-point lead at the half. The shooting didn't slow down in the second half, as Gwynedd shot 46% from the field pushing the lead to 25 with four minutes left. The Defenders (15-11) scored the last 11 points of the game, but the comeback attempt was too late.
The Griffin defense shined on Monday night. They held the Defenders to just 26% shooting on the night and forced 21 turnovers. Freshman
Taylour Alston (North Wales, PA/North Penn) anchored the defense blocking six of the Griffin's season-high blocked shots. Alston also finished with team-highs in points and rebounds with 12 apiece. Junior
Brittany Neill (Woodlyn, PA /Archmere Academy) chipped in 10 points and senior
Stacey Judge (Philadelphia, PA/ St. Hubert) tied a season-high with 11 rebounds to go along with her four points.
Baptist Bible's Ruth Butts and Jessica White each scored a game-high 14 points in the loss. White pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double.
McGrath totaled eight points and seven rebounds, becoming the 12
th Griffin to score 1,000 career points as she hit two free-throws in the second half.
Gwynedd will look to avenge last year's CSAC title loss when they travel to top-seeded Neumann University on Wednesday for a CSAC Tournament Semifinal slated to begin at 7 p.m.
