Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, Pa. / Philadelphia Electrical) chipped in 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds in his first start of the season.
Gwynedd-Mercy used a strong first half, shooting 50% from the floor to race out to a 50-41 halftime edge. The Griffins took a 20-13 lead early in the contest but PSU-Berks cut the deficit 26-25 but would never get any closer the rest of the game. GM used a 26-14 run to close out the half to build the nine point halftime advantage.
The Griffins started the second half on a 15-4 to give them their biggest lead, 65-45 Gwynedd continued their hot hand shooting 56.5% in the stanza. GM used 21 points off the bench in the second half, with eight from senior
Brandon Sharp (Hammonton, N.J. / St. Joseph's).
The Griffins hit for 52.7% from the floor on the night (29-of-55), knocking down eight three-pointers and connecting on 23-of-27 free throws. The Griffins also dominated the inside scoring forty points in the paint for the game.
The Nittany Lions (0-4) shot 39.7% for the game (27-of-68) making seven three pointers and shooting 13-23 from the free throw line. Berks were led by Tom Smith recording a double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing eleven rebounds. Shawn Green and Nate Weldon both reached double digits for the Nittany Lions scoring 14 and 10 respectively.
Gwynedd outrebounded Berks 41-34 on the glass. Junior
Doug Berzins (Royersford, Pa. / Spring-Ford) led the Griffins, by tying personal-best with eight.
The Griffins will host the defending CSAC champion Cabrini College Wednesday night at the Griffin Complex in a rematch of last season's title game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
