GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy won their third-straight contest, defeating Baptist Bible, 77-66, Thursday evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference Game.
The Griffins (10-4) were carried by their defense and hustle. Gwynedd pressured the Defenders (5-8) for forty minutes. The defense caused 20 Baptist Bible turnovers and the Griffins were able to convert those turnovers into 26 points on the offensive end. The victory was also aided by 17 second-chance points by the Griffins.
Gwynedd got out to a quick start, taking a 31-15 lead with six minutes to go in the first half. The Griffins then went scoreless for the next four minutes, allowing Baptist Bible to pull within one point at 31-30 with just over a minute to play in the first half. The run was sparked by one of the Defender's six first half three-pointers. Gwynedd managed to score the final points of the half to take a 38-30 lead at the break.
The bench was another large reason the Griffins were able to come out on top. The trio of freshman guard
Brandyn Wims, (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) and junior forwards
Brandon Sharp (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph's) and
Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical) scored 13, 9, and 6 points respectively. Senior
Jon Hogga (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) led the team with 15 points and senior
Jon Crabtree (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) added 14 points in the win.
Nathan Greve led all scorers with 17 points and Seth Bernard also scored 16 points including shooting 4 for 6 from beyond the arc.
The game was close till the end because of Gwynedd's struggles late at the free-throw line. The team finished just 11 for 20 in the second half.
Gwynedd improved to 5-2 in conference games with the win. They will be back in action Monday when they face Centenary College visits the Griffin Complex in a CSAC matchup starting at 7 p.m.
