GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Neumann handed the Gwynedd-Mercy College Women's Basketball team their first conference loss of the season Monday night by a score of 56-52.
The Griffins (7-5) pulled within two points at 50-48 with 2:37 left to go in the game and later one-point after hitting one of two from the charity stripe. Thanks to five second-half three-pointers, GM would rally from a deficit that was as much as 14 early in the second.
They ultimately could not overcome Neumann's defense which held Gwynedd to just 37.5% shooting for the game.
The Knights (9-6) took advantage of a 19-9 run over the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 30-22 lead at the break.
Senior
Kristy McGrath (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) led all scorers with 19 points in the losing effort. She also led the Griffins with six rebounds. Junior
Brittany Neill (Woodlyn, Pa./Archmere Academy Del.) tallied 10 points while junior
Bryn Cotteta (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and freshman
Dominic Jordan (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) added six points apiece.
GM would hit seven from long range on the night and was 21-of-56 from the rest of the floor, however, the Griffins were just 3-of-13 at the free-throw line.
The Knights were led by Katie Young's double-double. She finished the contest with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Teammates Bethany Humenik and senior Kieran Young added 12 and nine points respectively. Both finished with nine rebounds adding to Neumann's 49-37 edge in rebounding.
Gwynedd will look to bounce back at home against Baptist Bible on Thursday night in a 6 p.m. start.
