Jones Garners AEC Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

Lancaster, Pa. – (2/21/2022) – Senior guard Ty Jones (Harlem, N.Y.) averaged 22.0 points per game (PPG) and 6.5 rebounds per game (RPG) in Gwynedd Mercy University’s 2-0 week that included league wins over Immaculata University (W, 92-88 on Feb. 14) and Marywood University (W, 90-81 (OT) on Feb 16.). Jones offered 23 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in a 92-88 win at Immaculata University. Then he contributed 22 points, eight rebounds, and two assists to a 90-81 overtime win over Marywood University to earn himself a spot on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.

On Monday (Feb. 14), Gwynedd Mercy University (15-9, 7-5) played Immaculata University (7-16, 4-6) for the second time in five days and completed a sweep of their AEC rivals with a 92-88 triumph. A much higher scoring affair than its predecessor, this one saw four Griffins in double figures. Jones was the highest among them with a game-high 23 points. He also recorded five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

The Griffins led for most of the first half, pacing the Might Macs by as many as 10 points, 19-9 (11:55), before the Mighty Macs tied the affair at 25-25 with 6:26 remaining. From there, Immaculata University led to 41-38 (0:00) halftime spread. After intermission, the Mighty Macs were able to expand their lead to 15 points, 58-43 (13:50), before the Griffins' thunderous comeback knocked the deficit to single digits, 67-74, on a three pointer from sophomore guard Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J.) with 6:44 to play and stole the advantage, 84-83, on a layup from graduate forward Donaven Spencer (Sicklerville, N.J.) with 1:33 remaining. In the final 90 seconds, victory free throw kept the Griffins free from any Mighty Mac reprise.

Wednesday (Feb 16.) evening's memorable senior recognition was only to be outdone by the thrilling competition on the floor as Gwynedd Mercy University concluded their AEC season with a 90-81 overtime victory over Marywood University (7-16, 2-9). Graduate guard Matt O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) headlined the Griffin senior class and box score with a team-high 26 points, a rebound, six assists, a block, and two steals, but Jones was exceptional as well hitting all 11 of his free throws (11-of-11, 1.000) in a 21-point performance that came with eight rebounds and two assists. Gwynedd Mercy University scored the first six points of the affair, 6-0 (17:31), and led by as many as nine points, 21-12 (8:24), before falling behind Marywood University en route to a 31-30 (0:01) halftime deficit. The second half saw the Pacers lead to a 38-38 (16:43) stalemate, and the Griffins separate by as many as 11 points, 63-52 (7:52), only for a last-second dunk (75-75, 0:02) to force the extra frame. There, Gwynedd Mercy University flexed on the Pacers with a 15-6 run to the 90-81 (0:10) conclusion.

As the #3 seed in the 2021-2022 AEC Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament, Gwynedd Mercy University will host #6 Centenary University in an 8:00 p.m. quarterfinal on Monday, February 21.
