Talley Joins Root on AEC Baseball Weekly Honor Roll

Lancaster, Pa. – (4/7/2025) – Gwynedd Mercy University senior pitcher/outfielder Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) recorded the 100th hit of his collegiate career as part of a 4-for-5 performance, while sophomore pitcher Patrick Talley (Collingswood, N.J.) earned his third win (3-1) of the season with an impressive four-inning relief appearance that helped the Griffins to a 7-4 win over Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) (Apr. 1). As a result, both Griffins were recognized today on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Baseball Weekly Honor Roll.

The AEC Baseball Player of the Week award went to Marymount University fifth-year shortstop Bobby Leitzel (Burke, Va.), while the AEC Baseball Pitcher of the Week was given to Immaculata University sophomore pitcher Alex LePage (Cinnaminson, N.J.). Root and Talley were joined on the AEC Baseball Weekly Honor Roll by Marymount University pitcher/first baseman David Muirhead (Manassas, Va.), Centenary University (N.J.) senior utility Jake Keenan (Glenmoore, Pa.), Marywood University senior catcher A.J. Giannetti (New City, N.Y.), as well as Neumann University senior pitcher Nick Colon (Audubon, N.J.) and senior infielder Brandon Colon (King of Prussia, Pa.).

Gwynedd Mercy University (9-14, 0-4) snapped their recent four-game slide with Tuesday afternoon's 7-4 triumph over Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) (8-10-1). Root doubled in his first at-bat, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt, and hustled home on a wild pitch; 1-1. Later, he singled in the second, sixth, and eighth innings. Root knocked in a run with a ground out in the fifth inning and recorded his 100th career hit with single to left field in the bottom of the sixth. Meanwhile, Talley struck out the side in the second inning to inspire a three-run at-bat that propelled the Red and Gold to victory; he earned the win and struck out six while only allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk.

The Griffins were only able to get in one game in with AEC rival, Neumann University before the weekend rains hit. In that affair, Gwynedd Mercy University totaled six hits but found themselves on the short side of a 5-2 final. Freshman pitcher Brayden Scott (Gilbert, Ariz.) took the loss (3-2), allowing four earned runs on 12 hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. Freshman second baseman Deven Ross (Lansdale, Pa.) knocked in both Red and Gold runs with a double in the second inning (1-1) and a single in the ninth (5-2).

Gwynedd Mercy University is currently waiting out the wet weather and will look to resume their early-April schedule later is week with AEC contests versus Neumann University (TBA) and Centenary University (N.J.) (3:00 p.m. on April 11/12:00 p.m. (DH) on April 12).
