Jones Named AEC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Lancaster, Pa. – (1/31/2022) – Senior guard Ty Jones (Harlem, N.Y.) was the difference maker in Gwynedd Mercy University’s recent Atlantic East Conference (AEC) victories over Cabrini University (W, 65-62 on Jan. 24) and Marywood University (W, 86-83 (OT) on Jan. 26), averaging 21.0 points per game (PPG) and 10.0 rebounds per game (RPB), while garnering the league’s Defensive Player of the Week award with a block and six steals. Jones also provided an assist while grabbing 17 of his 20 rebounds on the defensive glass.

Gwynedd Mercy University (10-6, 2-2) visited Cabrini University (6-10, 2-2) for Monday (Jan. 24) evening's AEC contest. There, the first three minutes after halftime served as the difference in the final score with Jones carrying the heart of the Griffins to an eight-point, 40-32 (18:23), edge before graduate forward Donaven Spencer (Timber Creek, N.J.) made it nine points, 41-32 (16:55), with the second of two free throws. Later, another Gwynedd Mercy University push - this one coming in the paint from Spencer and graduate forward Justin Collins (Springfield, Pa.) - widened the gap to largest margin, 51-36 (12:28), and distancing the Cavaliers beyond the point of recovery in an eventual 65-61 conclusion. Jones hit five three-point baskets (5-of-11, .455) en route to a game-high 19 points. He fell a pair of rebounds shy of his third straight double-double as he grabbed eight rebounds on top of an assist and three steals.

Two days later (Jan. 26), Collins beat the regulation buzzer with a three-point basket that forced overtime in an AEC contest at Marywood University (7-10, 2-3); 73-73 (0:00). In the extra frame, a 7-0 Gwynedd Mercy University run and a pair of clutch buckets from graduate guard Keith Otto (Langhorne, Pa.) (0:43, 0:19) kept the Griffins at a safe distance from any Pacer threat in an 86-83 (0:00) conclusion. Jones led Gwynedd Mercy University for a majority of the affair with 23 points, 12 rebounds, a block, and three steals on the defensive end.

Gwynedd Mercy University continues their AEC schedule on Monday, January 31, when they welcome Centenary University to the Griffin Complex for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
