Summers Named AEC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, Stewart Earns Honor Roll Appearance
Lancaster, Pa. – (11/11/2024) – Gwynedd Mercy University graduate guard Shawn Summers (Montclair, N.J.) grabbed four rebounds and three steals in the Griffins’ 84-50 season-opening, PurpleStride Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Classic triumph over Rosemont College to earn the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week title. Senior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) joined Summers on the report as a Weekly Honor Roll honoree; Stewart led the Red and Gold with 15 points; he and Summers were the ring leaders in a high-scoring first half that saw the Griffins shoot 43.9% (18-of-41) from the floor and force 16 Raven turnovers.
Marywood University graduate guard Trevor Seitz (York, Pa.) was named the AEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Stewart was joined on the Weekly Honor Roll by Immaculata University senior guard John Proctor (Coatesville, Pa.) and sophomore guard Deniro Washington (Coatesville, Pa.), as well as Centenary University (N.J.) sophomore guard Kenneth Rankin (Ewing, N.J.).
Gwynedd Mercy University (1-0) wasted no time showing off their high octane offense as the Griffins owned a 13-point lead, 19-6 (12:51), within the first eight minutes tonight's season-opening PurpleStride Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Classic versus Rosemont College (0-1). The Griffins transformed it into a dominant 22-point perch, 40-18 (3:20), heading to the final three minutes of the first half. The Red and Gold then leaned on their 50-28 halftime lead and weathered a 20-13 Raven run (63-48, 9:42) before closing out the contest with a 21-2 flourish; 84-50. Stewart matched his points with two rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while Summers also recorded four rebounds, an assist, a block, and three steals. All 14 of his points came in the first half.
Gwynedd Mercy University is back in action on Tuesday, November 12, when they visit National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I member, Delaware State University for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
