Collins Earns First Career AEC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honor Roll Appearance

Lancaster, Pa. – (2/26/2024) – Junior midfielder Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.) totaled a goal on seven shots while recording six ground balls and five caused turnovers during Gwynedd Mercy University’s 0-2 opening week versus King’s College (Pa.) (L, 11-6 on Feb. 21) and Delaware Valley University (L, 7-12 on Feb. 24). The effort earned her, her first career appearance on the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Weekly Honor Roll.

Collins was joined on the AEC Weekly Honor Roll by Neumann University senior attack Lindsey Fagan (Norwood, Pa.) and Immaculata University senior midfielder Jacki Murray (Malvern, Pa.). The first AEC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week honors were respectively awarded to Cabrini University graduate attack Olivia Little (Springfield, Pa.) and senior defender Caroline Gallagher (Cape May Court House, N.J.).

Gwynedd Mercy University (0-2) opened its 2024 campaign with a trip to King's College (Pa.) (1-0) on Wednesday, February 21. The Monarchs paced the Griffins to an 8-6 halftime spread and an eventual 16-11 conclusion. Both senior attackers, Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) and Caroline Cleary (Chalfont, Pa.) finished with a team-high four points in the contest; the former totaled four goals on eight shots, while the latter complimented her career-high four assists with three ground balls and four draw controls. Collins recorded her first goal (8-13, 7:16 3QTR) of the season during a third-quarter player advantage and paired it with two ground balls and four caused turnovers.

On Saturday, February 24, Gwynedd Mercy University welcomed Delaware Valley University (1-0) to the Athletic Complex for their home opener. A pair of first-quarter goals (5:50, 0:33) from junior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) gave the Griffins an early 2-1 lead on the Aggies, but a 5-1 second-quarter reversal left the visitors ahead 6-3 at halftime. In the second half, the deficit slipped to five goals, 10-5 (3:12), by the end of the third quarter and there it stayed as a third Avellino score (10-6, 14:06) and the first collegiate goal for freshman attack Gianna Papa (Stratford, N.J.) (12-7, 3:33) matched Delaware University's fourth-quarter scores in a 12-7 conclusion. Collins scooped up four ground balls and caused a turnover.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Athletic Complex on Wednesday, February 28, when they host Wilkes University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
