Sharkey Second Straight Griffin to Earn AEC Defensive Player of the Week
Lancaster, Pa. – (11/21/2022) – Senior forward Cayla Sharkey (Lansdale, Pa.) became the second straight Griffin to earn Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week honors after totaling 10 points, 15 rebounds, an assist, seven blocks, and four steals in wins over Arcadia University (W, 76-47 on Nov. 15) and Wilks University (W, 71-53 on Nov. 17). Fellow senior, senior forward Haley Crossley (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned AEC Defensive Player of the Week honors on the first league report of the season (Nov. 14).
Sharkey scored five points in each victory, but it was her stalwart defense that impressed. She grabbed six of her nine rebounds against the Knights on the defensive glass and contributed a pair of blocks and three steals to an impressive 76-47 Battle of 309 victory. Two days later, her five points were paired with six rebounds – five off the defensive boards – an assist, five blocks, and a steal. The effort helped Gwynedd Mercy University (4-1) to 71-53 triumph at Wilks University.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Tuesday, November 29, when they visit Penn State Berks for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
