Kristen Johnson was appointed Gwynedd Mercy University's Head Women's Volleyball Coach prior to the 2017 season. Coach Johnson comes to the University after serving as the head coach at the Westtown School; a prep and boarding school located in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
Coach Johnson led the Griffins to their first postseason appearance in a dozen year with a Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Championship Tournament berth in 2019. Gwynedd Mercy University returned to the AEC postseason in 2021 as All-AEC seasons
Ashley Brown (1
st Team, Rookie of the Year) and
Aybria Purnell (2
nd Team) propelled the Griffins to the fifth seed.
A 2010 graduate of Hope College, Johnson played for the highly successful Flying Dutch She was a major part of two Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships and three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament appearances. As a senior, Johnson was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and garnered an all-region honorable mention after leading Hope College to an NCAA semifinal appearance and an all-time high season win total.
Following graduation from Hope College, Johnson earned her master’s degree from the Princeton Seminary in 2013. While in New Jersey, she coached and played on the Princeton University Club Team and took part in Princeton’s Summer Volleyball Camps. She also spent time assisting the North Brunswick High School Varsity, Junior Varsity, and club teams.
