Head Coach Keith Mondillo took over the Gwynedd Mercy University women's basketball program prior to the 1995-1996 season. His 24-year record stands at 518-274 (.654) with win #300 coming on January 30, 2010 (W, 84-72 vs. Marywood University), win #400 coming on December 29, 2015 (W, 54-44 vs. King's College (PA)), and win #500 coming on January 28, 2023 (W, 84-83 (OT) vs. Immaculata University). He ranks 18th on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III all-time active wins list and 29th on the all-time wins list. He serves on several NCAA committees, the NCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Committee, and Chair Person of the Mid-Atlantic Region Ranking Committee. From 2005-2009 he served on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee, which spans Divisions I, II & III.
Coach Mondillo’s conference record is a remarkable 336-99 (.772) with his teams appearing in 16 of the last 21 conference championships, including a 13-straight years from 1998 to 2010. Mondillo was the first coach in PSAC history to lead his team to consecutive undefeated seasons; winning the conference regular season championship and the conference tournament championships in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons. During that time the Griffins overall record was an amazing 51-7 and 36-0 in conference play. The undefeated seasons are an achievement that has not been duplicated by any team in the conference, men or women. Starting in 1997, the Griffins ran off five straight 20-win seasons. His best season was the 2006-07 campaign were the team finished 26-3, while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to an eventual Final Four Team, NYU. Coach Mondillo has been recognized by his peers as conference coach of the year in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2007, and 2012.
Late-season league wins over Centenary University (NJ) (W, 66-64 on Jan. 31) and Marywood University (W, 77-46 on Feb. 14) earned Gwynedd Mercy University (9-17, 2-8) a 2-8 conference record and the fifth seed for the 2023-2024 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. An AEC First Round matchup at #4 Centenary University (Feb. 19) ended the Griffins' season on a 66-58 final; the result was a 9-17 overall record. Senior guard Lynzie Eggers (Washington Township, N.J.) enjoyed a historical swan song with her second All-AEC Second Team selection serving as the exclamation point for a season that saw her record her 1,000th career point (W, 69-63 vs. Albright College on Dec. 6) en route to the fifth highest single-season point total (5th, 500) in program history and the fourth highest career point total (4th, 1,318).
The 2022-2023 Gwynedd Mercy University women's basketball season was one of milestones and accomplishment as the journey to 15-11 (8-4 AEC) and the #2 seed in the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Championship Tournament was highlighted by career seasons from senior captains, forward Haley Crossley '23 and guard Elise Sylvester '23 and the 500th career win for Coach Mondillo. Both Crossley and Sylvester reached 1,000 career points and earned All-AEC First Team honors; the latter was also crowned the league's Defensive Player of the Year.
A 13-12 overall record and a 7-5 league standing landed Gwynedd Mercy University the #4 seed in the 2021-2022 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. The high-octane Griffins hosted #5 Neumann University in their AEC Quarterfinal (Feb. 21) match-up and ousted the Knights by a 74-73 final thanks to a dominant 26-point, 17-rebound double-double from Crossley. Two days later (Feb. 23), the Griffins' postseason story continued on with a 70-59 semifinal upset of #1 Marymount University. Another Crossley double-double – 21 points, 16 rebounds – headlined a Gwynedd Mercy University effort that also included 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, three steals from Eggers, and 11 points, three rebounds, five assists, a block, and two steals from Sylvester. The victory advanced Gwynedd Mercy University to their first AEC Championship (Feb. 26) where their postseason run ended with a 70-57 loss to #2 Immaculata University. Crossley (1st/2nd), Sylvester (2nd/2nd), and Eggers (2nd/All-Rookie Team) each earned All-AEC and City of Basketball Love (CoBL) Area DIII Awards.
The 2016-17 season saw Mondillo lead the Griffins to their seventh conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time. As the third seed, Gwynedd was able to host the championship game at The Griffin Complex where they took down Cabrini, 67-49. In 2011-12, the team won CSAC Tournament Championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. They finished the season 20-8, recording the program's tenth 20-win season. In addition, Coach Mondillo recorded his tenth conference regular season championship, all since his arrival in 1995.
