Bernie Fitzgerald

Bernie Fitzgerald

Bernie Fitzgerald returns to the Griffins after a two-year stint coaching at the school where he teaches, La Salle College High School. His previous time on our campus lasted five years from 2011 to 2016 where he was entrusted with a great amount of responsibility that will help him immeasurably this time around.

“The experience I had here at Gwynedd Mercy University was the most fulfilling I have had as a coach. I am a strong advocate for D3 athletics and have always been. D3 should be D1”

The reason for such a positive experience may be the 2016 CSAC Championship and first round NCAA victory versus #6 Marietta College the program won during his previous tenure, but coach will also mention the relationships he created with some of Gwynedd’s finest, notably All League performers such as Frank Champion, Justin Knight, Julian Hyden and Darnell Artis. The camaraderie with fellow coaches was also a hallmark of his previous time here. We can only hope that the same will be in the future.

The textbook teacher/coach Bernie Fitzgerald has worked with teenagers and adults in the classroom and on the court for close to 40 years. Most recently he is teaching the Advanced Placement classes of United States History as well as sophomore Western Civilization at La Salle H.S.. Mr. Fitzgerald also teaches an introduction class of United States History at the college level at La Salle University.

Mr. Fitzgerald, a co-founder and President emeritus of the local charitable organization, The Breathing Room Foundation, is married to Maureen and is the proud father and step-father of 6 children, and 5 grandchildren.
