Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – (9/16/2026) - The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Soccer (1-5-1) team generated plenty of offensive opportunities Saturday afternoon, finishing with a 14-7 advantage in shots, but the Griffins were unable to convert their chances in a 3-0 setback to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (4-0-1). Junior goalkeeper
Cody Sell (Sellersville, Pa.) started in net for the Red and Gold but due to injury only recorded 17 minutes in net (1-5-1), while sophomore goalkeeper
Ethan Zimmerman (Myerstown, Pa.) finished the contest recording one save in 73 minutes in action.
Griffin Highlights:
- The Griffins wasted little time putting pressure on the Bobcats. Junior midfielder Gunnar Christensen (Finksburg, Md.) registered the first shot of the match at 4:29, forcing the Bobcats' goalkeeper into an early save. Sophomore forward Jackson Stuetz (Willow Grove, Pa.) followed with an attempt that went wide left in the 12th minute before senior forward Devario Gboho (Philadelphia, Pa.) sent a shot just wide right less than two minutes later.
- Gwynedd Mercy continued creating chances despite the early deficit. Sophomore midfielder Connor Piffath (Forest Hill, Md.) sent an attempt high in the 26th minute, while freshman defenseman Cillian Berkery (Philadelphia, Pa.) forced Pittsburgh at Greensburg into another save at 37:38. Berkery's opportunity led directly to a Gwynedd Mercy corner kick from senior forward Thomas Watkins (Morrisville, Pa.), as the Griffins looked to answer the Bobcats' second goal, which came at 36:47. Sophomore midfielder McCarthy Gomes (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa.) added another attempt in the closing seconds of the half, but his shot was blocked.
- Gwynedd Mercy finished with a significant 14-7 advantage in total shots and placed six attempts on goal. The Griffins also outshot the Bobcats 8-2 in the second half, demonstrating increased offensive pressure after intermission. Berkery finished with two shots and placed both on target, while Stuetz recorded two attempts with one goal.
Gwynedd Mercy is back in action on Wednesday, September 23, when the team hosts McDaniel College with a scheduled 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
