Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – (9/16/2026) – The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Soccer (1-4-1) team battled through 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon to earn a 1-1 draw with Cairn University (2-1-3). Sophomore midfielder Connor Piffath (Forest Hill, Md.) supplied the Griffins' goal late in the first half (39:23), while junior goalkeeper Cody Sell (Souderton, Pa.) made seven saves to preserve the tie.

Griffin Highlights: 

• The Griffins looked to establish their attack early. Sophomore forward Mava Mboko Celestin (Erie, Pa.) had a shot blocked in the sixth minute, leading to a Gwynedd Mercy corner kick from Freshman midfielder Antonio Magistro (Warminster, Pa.). Freshman defender Nigel Graham (Toms River, N.J.) followed with another opportunity in the 16th minute, sending his attempt just wide of the left post.
• In the 40th minute, junior defenseman Dominic Lodise (Bensalem, Pa.) delivered a long throw toward the far post, where Piffath finished the opportunity at 39:23 to even the contest at 1-1. The goal was Piffath's first of the season, while Lodise collected the assist.
• The Griffins carried the momentum of Piffath's equalizer into a tightly contested second half. While Cairn increased its offensive pressure, Sell and the Gwynedd Mercy defense repeatedly turned the Highlanders away. 
• Gwynedd Mercy created several opportunities to take the lead during the final 21 minutes. Sophomore forward Jackson Stuetz (Willow Grove, Pa.)  put a shot on goal at 69:41, forcing Cairn's goalkeeper into a save. Less than a minute later, freshman defender Cillian Berkery (Philadelphia, Pa.) nearly put the Griffins ahead with a header that went wide right.
• Sell came through when Gwynedd Mercy needed him most down the stretch. The Griffin goalkeeper finished the full 90 minutes with seven saves while allowing just one goal. Junior midfielder Gunnar Christensen (Finksburg, Md.) led the Griffins with two shots, while Stuetz also placed an attempt on goal. Gwynedd Mercy finished with seven shots, three shots on goal, and three corner kicks.

Gwynedd Mercy is back in action on Saturday, September 19, when the team hosts Pittsburgh University at Greensburg with a scheduled 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
