Griffins Split Fastpitch Day Two, Pound Pioneers for Season's First Win

Little River, S.C. - (3/10/20206) - Gwynedd Mercy University (1-3) got in the win column for 2026 with a 17-4, five-inning victory against Martin Luther College (1-5); the heart of the Red and Gold lineup was 7-for-9 with eight runs scored and eight runs-batted-in (RBI) in the contest. Earlier in the day, the Griffins were mercy-ruled themselves as they went scoreless in five innings opposite Spartansburg Methodist College (15-2); 11-0. Senior shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) (1-for-2) and junior first baseman Kassidy Kehoe (Lansdale, Pa.) (1-for-2) recorded the only two Griffin hits against the Pioneers with back-to-back, lead-off singles in the top of the fifth inning.

Griffin Highlights vs. Spartansburg Methodist College
  • Cohen was Gwynedd Mercy University's first base runner of the game with her fifth-inning, lead-off single to left field. She immediately moved to second base on a Kehoe single to left field, but the duo never made it around the diamond as the Pioneers retired the next three Griffins in order.
Griffin Highlights vs. Martin Luther College
  • Gwynedd Mercy University wasted no time against the Knights as they plated six runs in their first at-ba; 6-0. They added three more in the second (9-0) and seven in the third to hold a commanding 16-0 lead.
  • In the first inning, a Smith double to center field scored two Griffins (2-0). Smith then scored on a Cohen single (3-0), before a rash of beanballs and a passed ball brought home a few more (6-0). In the second inning, more bases-loaded walks and a wild pitch extended the Red and Gold's lead by three runs (9-0). And in the third inning. the Knights' poor pitching continued as the Griffins scored seven more runs with two hits and eight walks.
  • From the middle of the lineup, a 3-for-3 day from junior catcher Maya Hellyer (Quakertown, Pa.) stood out among the multi-hit performances. She singled in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
  • In addition to the heart, freshman designated player Ashlyn Merz (Bensalem, Pa.) (1-for-2) and junior first baseman Jess Kepner (Pipersville, Pa.) (1-for-2) also recorded hits in the contest.
  • Freshman pitcher Lexie Kurth (Baldwin, Md.) went the distance in the circle (5.0 Innings Pitched). She held the Knights to three earned runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out seven.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their stay at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11, when they play New Jersey City University (NCJU) (9:00 a.m.) and Theil College (1:00 p.m.) on Field 11.
