Griffins Refuse to Fold in Hard-Fought Road Battle Against Saints

Arlington, Va. - (1/24/2026) – Gwynedd Mercy University (5-13, 2-5 AEC) put forth a spirited performance on the road against a strong Marymount University (9-9, 6-1 AEC) squad, ultimately falling 69–60 in Atlantic East Conference (AEC) play. Junior guard Rachel Dunn's (Lansdale, Pa.) performance was a tone-setter for the Griffin offense all evening. Dunn finished with a career-high 16 points, converting 8-of-15 (53%) from the field and battling inside for eight rebounds.

Griffin Highlights:

  • Gwynedd Mercy responded quickly after an early deficit, using aggressive interior play and smart ball movement to climb back into striking distance. After trailing 19–11 in the first quarter, the Griffins closed the half on a high note, cutting the margin to 31–26 at intermission thanks to improved execution on both ends of the floor.
  • Freshman guard Layla Verbit (Sellersville, Pa.) added nine points, including key baskets during the second and third quarters, to help sustain the team's momentum. The Red and Gold also received strong contributions from sophomore guard Alexis Kanzinger (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and junior forward Azzy Crumpton (Conshocken, Pa.), who each scored eight points, with Kanzinger knocking down two three-pointers and Crumpton adding valuable free throws down the stretch. Sophomore guard Brianna McFadden (Fairless Hills, Pa.) contributed eight points and three steals, helping fuel several Griffin runs and providing tenacious perimeter defense.
  • The third quarter was a highlight for the Griffins as they surged to life offensively, shooting over 60% from the field (8-13) and including a flurry of high-percentage looks that tightened the score heading into the fourth. Despite Marymount's late scoring burst, Gwynedd Mercy refused to relent, cutting the lead to a single possession in the final stanza before the home team pulled away.
  • Defensively, the Griffins forced 22 points off turnovers and scored 20 in the paint, illustrating a physical and effort-driven approach against a tough Atlantic East opponent. Every player who saw the floor contributed to the fight, underscoring the team's depth and competitive spirit throughout the contest.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to conference play on Saturday, January 31, when the team hosts Pratt Institute for the second time this season for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
