Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (5/2/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (13-23, 3-10 AEC) hosted its final game at Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball field for the 2025 season, welcoming Marywood University (14-21, 3-10 AEC). With the Griffins trying to secure the final spot in the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Tournament, the Red and Gold needed to start out the series against the Pacers strong. For the final time in his collegiate career, senior pitcher Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) made his final start at Gwynedd Mercy. Root made history in his final start and was sensational, pitching a complete game (9 innings), allowing seven hits, one earned run, two walks, and striking out five. With his final strikeout in the bottom of the ninth, Root reached 100 career strikeouts. The offense was unable to help Root secure the victory as the team fell to Marywood 3-2 and Root fell to 0-3 on the season.
Griffin Highlights:
- Down 1-0 going into the third inning, Root also secured the Griffins' first run of the contest with a single to centerfield, scoring sophomore infielder Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) and knotting the score 1-1.
- A single from freshman catcher Gabe Tomei (Manahawkin, N.J.) and an error from the Pacer's second baseman, junior infielder A.J. Johnson (Lavallette, N.J.), heads-up baserunning allowed him to cross home plate bringing the Griffins within one (3-2).
Gwynedd Mercy University plays its final two contests of 2025 with a trip up to Marywood University on Saturday, May 3, with a 12:00 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
