Griffins Improve to 2-0 in AEC Play After Win Against Mighty Macs

Immaculata, Pa., - (4/9/2025) -  It was a great day for the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins (4-10, 2-0 AEC) who defeated the Immaculata University Mighty Macs 17-8.  Sophomore attacker Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) led the Red and Gold's attack with a career-high seven goals.  Though the Griffins were not able to convert on their first five shots in the first quarter, Gordon opened the scoring for both teams with a drive to goal (08:45).  Immaculata scored twice in the final four minutes of the first quarter (03:55, 00:48), resulting in a 1-2 score favoring the Mighty Macs.  Gwynedd Mercy and Immaculata continued to battle out throughout the second quarter, with multiple turnovers and subsequent ground ball pickups from both teams.  With 6:45 remaining in the half, Rebecca Gordon reached the goal, beginning a hot-streak for the Griffins.  Four different Griffins scored and the defensive unit was able to blank the Mighty Macs, resulting in a 5-2 goal at halftime.

Immaculata began the second half with a goal by Jacki Murray just over 1 minute, but Gwynedd Mercy was not discouraged.  Gordon's third game of the day came 24 seconds later off a feed from Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.).  Sophomore midfielder Ava DeMarco (Woolwich Twp., N.J.) scored her third goal of the year (12:53).  The Mighty Macs went on a three-goal run (12:03, 10:49, 05:22) and Gwynedd Mercy utilized a timeout to regroup.  The Griffins then went on a run, and though Immaculata scored once more in the third quarter, the Griffins had all of the momentum they needed to have a 7-1 fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Griffin Highlights:

  • Gwynedd Mercy's Gianna Papa (Stratford, N.J.) had a career-high day with six total points (2g, 4a) and four ground balls.
