Gwynedd Mercy Celebrates Senior Day Despite AEC Loss Against Neumann University

Gwynedd Valley, Pa., - (4/12/2025) -   The Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins (4-11, 2-1) had a tough opponent in the Neumann University Knights (7-8, 2-1) in the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) match up this afternoon, ultimately losing the game 8-19.  The Griffins spent the early afternoon celebrating their four outstanding seniors: Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.), Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.), Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.), and Maddie Jeter (Bensalem, Pa.).  While the team was fired up to play, three Griffins green cards were awarded in the first quarter and allowing the Knights to capitalize on goals.

Coming out of halftime, Gwynedd Mercy was on a determine to get the game back on track.  Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) received a a feed from Cheyenne Avellino and scored 1:10 minutes into the third quarter.  Neumann scored twice more before Alysia Collins capitalized on a pass from freshman Elena Colliluori (Gilbertsville, Pa.).  The final quarter of play was the best for the Griffins.  The Knights struck first (13:41), but the Griffins went on a four-goal hot streak.  Collins and Colliluori both scored again (10:13, 8:13) and Hailey Bloom got into the scoring action with a great diagonal pass from Gordon.  She then proceeded to close out the game with a goal (her third for the day) with 02:04 remain the game, and although it was not the win the Griffins was looking for there were plenty of positive plays to be proud of.

Griffin Highlights

  • The Griffins goalkeepers combined for 10 saves in today's loss, eight of which were credited to Victoria Sloan (Philadelphia, Pa.). 

  • Seven different Gwynedd Mercy players contributed caused turnovers, with Ava DeMarco (Woolwich Twp., N.J.) and Cheyenne Avellino leading the way with two each. 

  • Though the Red and Gold started with a sloppy first half with 10 turnovers they proceeded to get better each as the game progressed in this statistic, with eight, four, and two turnovers in the final three quarters respectively. 

The Griffins host their penultimate AEC regular-season match-up on Wednesday, April 15 against the Marywood Pacers at 4:00 p.m.
