Errors Cost Root, Red and Gold Win in Game Two Against Knights

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/4/2025) - After Mother Nature postponed Gwynedd Mercy University's (9-15, 0-5 AEC) previous four contests, the Red and Gold finally returned to the diamond as the team took on Neumann University (14-6, 4-1 AEC) in an Atlantic East Conference (AEC) showdown. The contest was a classic pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for only 13 hits. Senior pitcher Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) pitched an absolute gem against the team's conference rival, going eight innings, allowing five hits, no walks, and striking out five. Ultimately, a five-run ninth inning to go along with three errors from the Griffins would be enough for Neumann to go up 2-0 in the season series as the Knights defeated Gwynedd Mercy 5-1.

Griffin Highlights:

  • In the sixth inning, junior infielder Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.) jump-started the Red and Gold's offense with a leadoff double, putting him in scoring position with no outs. A sacrifice bunt from sophomore infielder Ryan Horner (Cinnaminson, N.J.) moved DeCarlo 90 feet away from crossing home plate. Freshman infielder Deven Ross (Lansdale, Pa.) hustled down the first base line, causing the third baseman to rush his throw, leading to an error and scoring DeCarlo, giving Gwynedd Mercy a 1-0 lead.

  • Only senior outfielder Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) (2-for-5), Root (1-for-4), and DeCarlo (3-for-4)

  • Sophomore pitcher Michael Inglisa (Delran, N.J.) got the final three outs in the contest, but was credited with the loss (1-4).

Gwynedd Mercy University plays the final game against Neumann University tomorrow, Thursday, April 10, with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
