Red and Gold Look To Avoid Sweep Against Marymount

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/29/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (8-13, 0-3 AEC) welcomed Marymount University (13-10, 3-0 AEC) to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Field for the teams' first Atlantic East Conference (AEC) doubleheader of the 2025 season. After a forgettable game one down in Arlington, the Griffins looked to bounce back against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season. The pitching for Marymount was a problem all day for the Red and Gold as the team in two games combined for a total of five hits and were swept in their first test of AEC play this season with a 9-4 defeat in game one and a 10-0 defeat in game two. Freshman pitcher Brayden Scott (Gilbert, Ariz.) had his first rough outing in his young career, only going 4.1 innings, allowing five earned runs, nine hits, four walks, and striking out two in the loss (3-1). Senior captain pitcher Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) looked to get the Griffins in the win column in game two but pitched five innings, allowing seven earned runs, nine hits, four walks, and three strikeouts (0-1).

Griffin Highlights:

Game One:

  • Down four nothing (4-0) in the bottom of the fourth inning, junior infielder Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.) hit a rocket past the third baseman, scoring three runs and allowing Gwynedd Mercy to be within striking distance (4-3).
  • Marymount would answer back with three runs of their own, not until Root answered back with a run-batted-in (RBI) sacrifice fly to right field, scoring freshman infielder Deven Ross (Lansdale, Pa.) (4-7)
  • As the team managed only two hits, they walked six times but left eight runners on base throughout the contest.

Game Two:

  • Gwynedd Mercy only managed three hits in game two, coming from DeCarlo in the first, junior outfielder Jon Cimino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) in the sixth, and Ross in the seventh.

Gwynedd Mercy University looks to rebound after a tough weekend as the team welcomes Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) on Tuesday, April 1, for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
