Kings Point, N.Y., - (3/26/2025) -  It was a tough evening for the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins (2-9) as they lost an away contest against the United States Merchant Marine Academy (3-2), 2-18.  The Mariners scored twice (13:37, 12:26) before Ava DeMarco (Woolwich Twp., N.J.) found the back of the net off a pass from Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.) with 11:43 remaining in the quarter.  The Merchant Marine Academy was not easily deterred, however, and they scored twice more in quick succession (11:27, 11:00). 

The Mariners dominated possession time with 34 shots as compared to the Griffins' nine.  Gwynedd Mercy was able to draw four free-position shots and Elena Collilouri (Gilbertsville, Pa.) was able to take advantage of the favorable positioning with 09:58 remaining in the first half.  The Merchant Marine Academy used their speed and physicality to their advantage, winning the battle for ground balls (29-13) and draw controls (16-7).  The Griffins were unable to score in the second half, though they fought hard throughout. 

Griffin Highlights: 

• Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Williams (Cinnaminson, N.J.) recorded her 100th career save with 14:44 remaining in the third quarter. 

• Gwynedd Mercy had a tough time clearing the ball out of their defensive zone, with only 33.3% success. 

• Alysia Collins lead the Griffins with three ground balls, one caused turnover and an assist. 

Gwynedd Mercy returns home for a 1:00 p.m. match on Saturday, March 29 against Albright College.
