Griffins Fall Short in Second Half Comeback Attempt

Gwynedd Valley, Pa., - (3/29/2025) - The Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins (2-10) tried to come back after a difficult second quarter of play but fell short against the Albright College Lions (4-6), losing the game 12-18.  The game was evenly matched in the first quarter, with Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) kicking things off with a goal just 28 seconds into the game.  Albright was quick to retaliate with a goal from Zoe Dicks (13:56), but Gordon began a hot streak with a feed from Gianna Papa (Stratford, N.J.).  The game continued in a back and forth manner, though Albright was able to knock two goals in in the last 10 seconds of the quarter (00:10, 00:00).  The Lions utilized this momentum going into the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run.  Though the Griffins had five shots in the second quarter none were able to make it to the back of the net, and defensively Gwynedd Mercy had trouble defending Albright's fast break schemes.

The Red and Gold came out of halftime ready to dig deep and chip away at their 10-point deficit.  Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) hustled to snag the first draw control of the half, and Gwynedd Mercy was rewarded for its grit with another goal from Rebecca Gordon (14:15).  Albright and Gwynedd Mercy traded goals yet again (13:24, 10:46) and both teams' defensive units held the score for the remainder of the quarter.

Gwynedd Mercy hit their stride in the fourth quarter of play.  Though the first five minutes continued to be a defensive lockdown, Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.) broke through the defensive stand off with a goal off an assist from Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.) (10:27), bringing the Griffins to an 8-goal deficit.  Just 13 seconds later, Avellino took the ball to the cage, though she was foiled by the crossbar.  D'mya Medley (Philadelphia, Pa.) caused a turnover on the defensive side of the ball and Allyssa Seifert (Philadelphia, Pa.) utilized her speed to feed the ball to Collins for another goal (09:17).  Gwynedd Mercy continued to play hard and got the score to within five (08:42, 04:16), and though Albright was able to score two quick goals to put the game just out of reach for Gwynedd Mercy, the team was able to end the game with their heads held high.

Griffin Highlights:

  • Freshman attacker Allyssa Seifert (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched her first collegiate goal in today's contest with a feed from Rebecca Gordon with 04:16 remaining in the game.

  • Gwynedd Mercy was unable to convert the five free-position shots they took over the course of the game; Albright was able to score once out of their three position shots.

  • The Griffins edged out the Lions in draw controls 17-16.  Freshman attacker Elena Colliluori (Gilbertsville, Pa.) and senior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino combined for 14 of Gwynedd Mercy's 17 controls.

Gwynedd Mercy begins conference play on Saturday, April 5 as they travel to Centenary College for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
