Griffins' Stalled Momentum Leads to Loss Against Golden Wolves

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/22/2025) -  The Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins (2-8) hosted the Alvernia University Golden Wolves (2-6) this afternoon, losing the contest 2-18.  The Griffins kept it tight for the first quarter, with the first goal of the game coming from Hannah Tyler of Alvernia with 10:35 remaining.  Though both teams continued battling back and forth, Gwynedd Mercy had five turnovers or penalties, resulting in a stalled defense.  Alvernia was able to make a run in the remaining five minutes of the quarter, with three unanswered goals (03:19, 01:47, 01:14) to end the quarter

The Griffins came out with fire to begin the second quarter, though momentum was again hard to find as the Golden Wolves tallied another goal just 53 seconds into the quarter.  Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.) picked up a draw control, and though she and Gwynedd Mercy's attack took multiple shots, none were able to make it to the back of the cage.  Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) was able to snag the Griffins' first goal on a free-position shot with 08:26 remaining in the third quarter.  Avellino was able to score once more in the game with an assist from Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.) as time wound down (00:35).

Griffin Highlights:

  • The combined efforts of sophomore goalies Nikki Willliams (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and Victoria Sloan (Philadelphia, Pa.) resulted in 11 total saves on the day.

  • The Golden Wolves handedly won the battle for 50/50 balls, beating the Griffins in both ground balls and draw controls 24-12 and 15-8 respectively.

  • Four separate Griffins caused turnovers today, with Ayana Lyons (Norristown, Pa.) leading the way with two.

The Griffins return to action on Wednesday, March 26 when they travel to Kings Port, N.Y. at 7:00 p.m. for a game against the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
