Balanced Attack Puts Griffins Over Colonels in First Season Win

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - (2/26/2025) -  Seven different Gwynedd Mercy University (1-3) players contributed to their 17-6 win against Wilkes University (0-3) this evening.  After starting the game with a goal from senior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) (13:54), Wilkes player Elisia Frank converted just under two minutes later (12:32).  The Griffins struck again at 9:35 left in the first quarter and never looked back, maintaining the lead for the rest of the game.  Sophomore attacker Gianna Papa (Stratford, N.J.) had the hot hand in the first quarter, with all three of her goals coming as a spark to Gwynedd Mercy.

The Griffins were locked in in the second half, with just three turnovers as opposed to 14 in the first two quarters of play. The Colonels made quick work of utilizing a man-up opportunity with 14:26 to go in the third quarter. Gwynedd Mercy's Deshe Dunlap (Philadelphia, Pa.) was able to cause a turnover and Alysia Collins (Royersford, Pa.) picked up a crucial ground ball to get the Griffins back in their attacking zone.  The Griffins went on a five-goal streak to secure the win.

Griffin Highlights:

  • Four separate Griffins recorded hat tricks in today's game, with Gianna Papa (Stratford, N.J.) leading the Griffins attack with a career-high 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists).

  • Victoria Sloan (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded her 100th save in today's contest, finishing the game with seven saves total.

  • The Griffins won the battle for ground balls and successful clears, outpacing the Colonels 24-18 in the former and 78% vs 60% in the latter.
