Tomei Makes History In Victory Over The Aggies

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (2/24/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-1) hosted Delaware Valley University (0-2) in a warm February non-conference matchup as freshman catcher Gabe Tomei (Manahawkin, N.J.) played in a game he and the Griffin faithful will never forget. Tomei in the first inning hit a moonshot to right field (3-1) with his afternoon not being finished. He would go on to secure a single in the second, a triple in the third, and a double in the sixth to become the first member of the Red and Gold in program history to hit for the cycle. Tomei went four-for-five on the day with five runs-batted-in (RBI) and a walk to help lead the Griffins to a dominating 23-7 victory.

Griffin Highlights:

  • On the first pitch, Gwynedd Mercy saw junior outfielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) hit a rocket down the left field line reaching second and putting him into scoring position. Nodeland would eventually come around to score off a wild pitch evening the score to 1-1. After Tomei's homerun (3-1), freshman infielder Deven Ross (Lansdale, Pa.) recorded a two-RBI single through the middle allowing senior infielder Ricky Templeton (West Deptford, N.J.) to score as well as junior infielder Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.) (4-1). To finish off the first Nodeland saw a batting opportunity once again in the first and secured an RBI single (5-1.) The Red and Gold would get two more in the inning (8-1) due to an error from the Aggies before the inning would come to a close.
  • In the second inning, the Griffins got their scoring started by Ross taking one for the team being hit by a pitch (9-1) bringing home Templeton. Nodeland got his third RBI of the day with a single up the middle bringing home sophomore infielders Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) and Ryan Horner (Cinnaminson, N.J.) (11-1)
  • After Tomei's two-RBI triple (13-3), DeCarlo followed up with an RBI of his own (14-3). Gwynedd Mercy brought home one more run in the bottom of the third to take a 15-3 lead.
  • The Griffins tacked on an additional five runs in the fifth with RBI from Haines, junior outfielder Jon Cimino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), senior outfielder Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.), DeCarlo, and Horner.
  • Gwynedd Mercy would go on to score their final two runs in the sixth to the eventual 23-7 victory.
