Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (2/21/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (1-1) hosted Penn State Berks (1-1) to kick off the 2025 season with a Saturday matinee doubleheader. After the Griffins' first two games of the season were postponed due to weather, the Red and Gold came out of the dugout fired up and ready to showcase their talent in front of the home crowd. After scoring nine runs in the first four innings, the Nittany Lions answered back with seven unanswered runs and snuck away with a 10-9 victory in game one. In game two freshman pitcher Brayden Scott (Gilbert, Ariz.) got the nod and was lights out in his first collegiate career start. Scott went 7.1 innings allowing only four hits, one earned run, and two walks while striking out seven. Scott shutting out Penn State Berks bats helped lead Gwynedd Mercy to a 7-1 game two victory.
Griffin Highlights:
Game One:
- Junior infielder Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.) welcomed himself as a member of the Red and Gold in the first inning with a double to left center field driving in both junior outfielder Jon Cimino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and freshman catcher Gabe Tomei (Manahawkin, N.J.) (2-0).
- Three batters later sophomore infielder Ryan Horner (Cinnaminson, N.J.) also hit a double bringing home DeCarlo and senior outfielder Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) (4-0).
- The Griffins sent all nine batters up to the dish in the first inning and the nine-hole hitter freshman Devin Ross (Lansdale, Pa.) finished off the inning with a run-batted-in (RBI) single to second base bringing the score to 5-0 after the team's first inning in 2025.
- In the fourth inning, Ross put the bat on the ball and an error from the right fielder allowed both sophomore infielder Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) and senior infielder Ricky Templeton (West Deptford, N.J.) to score (7-1).
- Gwynedd Mercy scored their final runs in the fourth inning when both Haines and Horner drove in a run apiece (9-2).
Game Two:
- After suffering a tough game one loss to the Nittany Lions, the Griffins came out in game two with revenge on their mind as Junker started the scoring with an RBI single to left field (1-0).
- The third inning highlighted the Red and Gold's patience at the plate. With the bases loaded, Haines was hit by a pitch to bring home DeCarlo (2-0), while the next batter Horner worked a walk bringing the score to 3-0. In his first career start for the Griffins junior infielder A.J. Johnson (Lavallette, N.J.) was the next batter and came through with a two-RBI single to centerfield (5-0). Junker would cap off the inning working yet another walk in the inning bringing home Johnson and bringing the score to 6-0 heading into the fourth.
- The Red and Gold's final run of the day came from Horner who once again hit another double to left field allowing senior pitcher Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) and lead to the eventual 7-1 victory.
Gwynedd Mercy University is back in action on Monday, February 24 when the team takes on Delaware Valley University for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
