Blue Jays Fly Over Griffins in Season Opener

Elizabethtown, Pa. - (2/13/2025) -  The Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins (0-1) opened their season today traveling to Elizabethtown College (1-0) for a windy contest.  After a slow start in the first quarter, the Griffins were never able to gain control of the score against a fast and accurate Blue Jay squad.

After a frigid halftime, the Griffins were able to win the draw control battle 9-4, allowing for increased time of possession in the attacking end of the field. This increased time directly correlated with increased offensive production, with sophomore midfielder Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) tallying three points in the team's loss.

Goalkeeper Victoria Sloan (Philadelphia, Pa) matched Elizabethtown's 9 saves, but the swarm of the Blue Jay's defenders overwhelmed the Griffins, who finished the game at .43 clear percentage.

Griffin Highlights:
- Sophomore defender Ava DeMarco (Woolwich Twp, N.J.) had a strong performance with a team-high four ground balls.
- 13 of Gwynedd Mercy's 28 turnovers occurred in the first quarter of the game, with the team's defensive unit settling in with good slides during the final three quarters of play.
- Freshman midfielder Elena Colliluori (Gilbertsville, Pa) had an impressive college debut with seven draw controls for the Griffins.

Gwynedd Mercy looks to bounce back with their home opener on Wednesday, February 19, where they will play Arcadia University for a 4:00 pm start.
