Heartbreaker; Late Goal Stuns Griffins in AEC Season Opener

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (10/11/2025) - Atlantic East Conference (AEC) play began today for Gwynedd Mercy University (2-11, 0-1), who welcomed the defending league champions, Marywood University (6-7, 1-0) to the Athletic Complex for this afternoon's affair. The Griffins gave the Pacers all they could handle as tallies from senior forward Mackenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.), 1-0 (5:13) and freshman midfielder Rhyan Poole (North Wales, Pa.), 2-1 (38:27) kept the Red and Gold in the lead for a majority of the contest. Unfortunately, a late turnover, deep in the Gwynedd Mercy University end allowed Marywood University to steal the AEC prize in a 3-2 (59:12) conclusion. Junior Nikki Williams (Cinnaminson, N.J.) was outstanding in the cage as the Red and Gold goalkeeper made several diving stops in a 12-save performance.

Griffin Highlights
  • Gwynedd Mercy University put pressure on the Marywood University end from the start of the affair and Reed played a well-timed strike off a Pacer stick to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead just past the five-minute mark; 1-0 (5:13).
  • In the 39th minute, Poole put Gwynedd Mercy University back in the lead when she touched a centering pass from junior defender Lillie Uttenreither (Bel Air, Md.) to the back of the Marywood University cage; 2-1 (38:27).
  • Despite an 11-0 shot deficit and a 7-0 penalty corner deficit, Gwynedd Mercy University denied the Pacers for most of the fourth quarter. Williams totaled four saves in the frame.
  • Reed totaled five shots, senior defender Abby LePage (Cinnaminson, N.J.) recorded two shots, while Poole and fellow freshman, forward Gianna Radcliffe (Harleysville, Pa.) recorded the other Red and Gold offerings.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to action on Wednesday, October 22, when they visit Neumann University for a 4:00 p.m. AEC contest.
