Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (9/30/2024) - After a tough matchup against AEC foe Marymount University (L, 0-5 on Sept. 28), Gwynedd Mercy University (2-11-1) welcomed Moravian University Greyhounds (4-2-3) to the Athletic Complex last Monday. Gwynedd Mercy's freshman midfielder Mel Velasquez (Philadelphia, Pa.) showed grit and hustle off the bench as a drew a foul inside the Greyhound box to secure a penalty kick opportunity. Sophomore midfielder Luke O'Donnell (Glenside, Pa.) took the free kick and followed is initial strike with a successful rebound that found the Griffins an early 1-0 lead (34:56). This goal for O'Donnell marked his team-high four tally of the season. The Greyhounds would not go away quietly as they would score five unanswered goals and complete a 5-1 victory.
Griffin Highlights:
- Four of the five goals for Moravian came in the second half, as the Greyhounds outshot the Griffins 23-1 alone in the second half and 37-8 in the contest.
- Freshman goalkeeper Fionn Berton (Bordentown, N.J.) made his sixth consecutive start in net for the Red and Gold and finished with a career-high ten saves in the loss (0-5-1).
- Sophomore midfielder Javier Hidalgo (Palisades Park, N.J.) made a rare start on defense today and held up strong including drawing multiple fouls as Moravian was in the offensive zone and not letting any of his defenders by him in a one on one scenario.
Gwynedd Mercy University is back in action on Wednesday, October 2 when the Battle of 309 comes to the Athletic Complex as the Griffins take on Arcadia University for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
