Gwynedd Mercy Splits Home Tri-Match, Purnell Points 100th Career Ace

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (9/28/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (9-5) welcomed Penn State Brandywine (2-10) and Notre Dame of Maryland University (8-5) out of the rain for today's tri-match. The Griffins opened the day with a 9-0 run and capitalized on the perch with a 25-6 win in their first set with the Nittany Lions. Despite a 26-24 setback, the Red and Gold finished off Penn State Bria Purnell 100th Career Ace vs. Penn State Brandywine (9/28/2024)Brandywine with succeeding wins of 25-20 and 25-16; 3-1. Fifth-year outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.) reached 100 career aces with her second ace of the match. The neutral site affair saw the Gators defeat the Nittany Lions by a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) measure. Afterwards, the Griffins battled Notre Dame (Md.) to a similar three-set conclusion; 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-19).

  • Gwynedd Mercy University's impressive opening set saw the Griffins hit .433 (16K-3E-30TA). The Griffins hit .222 (45K-19E-117TA) for the match and three finished with double digit kills.
  • The Red and Gold scored 13 aces for the third time this season. Purnell scored her milestone ace as the Griffins' seventh and junior setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) lead the pride with six.
  • Gwynedd Mercy University also totaled five blocks; sophomore outside hitter Kate Etter (Chambersburg, Pa.) led with a solo block and two assists. She paired them with 11 kills, two aces, and seven digs.
  • Purnell finished with 13 kills, two assists, three aces, a block assist, and 11 digs.
  • Junior middle hitter Charlotte Pugh (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the third Griffin in double digit kills; she scored 10 in addition to recording an assist, a block assist, and two digs.
  • Gaston totaled three kills, 38 assists, her six aces, a solo block, and 10 digs.
  • Freshman libero Annalise Kuppel (Estell Manor, N.J.) recorded a team-high 14 digs. She also provided an assist and scored an ace.

  • Notre Dame of Maryland University kept Gwynedd Mercy University off balance as the Griffins finished with a .045 (28K-24E-88TA) hitting percentage.
  • Purnell led with a dozen (12) kills, but Etter was more efficient with 11 kills on a team-high .280 (11K-4E-25TA) hitting percentage.
  • Gaston finished with 24 assists, one of three Griffin aces, and six digs.
