Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (9/11/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-3) welcomed Albright College (1-3) to the Athletic Complex for today's field hockey home opener. The Griffins kept the deficit to 1-0 (4:42) through the first quarter and played the Lions well in the second quarter, but it was a pair of third-quarter scores (33:00, 34:57) that did the Red and Gold in; 3-0. Gwynedd Mercy University had three players with multiple shots; junior midfielder Mackenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.), senior forward Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), and senior midfielder Laura Filchner (Bath, Pa.) each took two apiece. Prior to the contest, Gwynedd Mercy University Head Coach Alexa Ostoich, Albright College Head Coach Catherine Wiese (Ostoich), and their teams gathered at midfield for a group picture to honor the first-ever coaching engagement between the sisters Ostoich.

Griffin Highlights

• Gwynedd Mercy University totaled eight shots and had three penalty corner opportunities.
• Reed and Filchner each put one of their shots on-goal. Junior midfielder Emma Dodd (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman forward Jillian McAleer (Stratford, N.J.) took the other two Griffin shots.
• Senior goalkeeper Morgan Lawless (Bristol, Pa.) recorded four saves in the loss (2-3).

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Athletic Complex on Saturday, September 14, to host Virginia Wesleyan University in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
