Saints Steal Game One from Griffins, Game Two of AEC Doubleheader Halted Due to Darkness

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/9/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (8-13, 2-3) led Marymount University (12-12-1, 5-2) 3-2 heading to the seventh inning of game one; there, the Saints plated four runs to steal the first game of today's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) doubleheader by a 6-3 measure. The second game of the twin bill did not come to conclusion as darkness halted the game with a 1-1 score in the top of the 10th inning. Senior third baseman Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the only Griffin to record multiple hits (2-of-3) in the first game, but the bottom of the line-up did damage with three runs-batted-in (RBI) from the 7-9 spot. In game two, senior Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) matched the Saints' hurler as she pitched in all nine completed inning and held Marymount University to five hits in those frames.

Griffin Highlights - Game One
  • Gwynedd Mercy University dug out of a 2-0 hole with three runs in the bottom of the second inning; there, a lead-off double from Scally, a ground-out, a fielder's choice, and a stolen base by Baumeister allowed the Griffins to score back-to-back runs on a ground out from senior Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) (1-2) and a triple to right field from freshman right fielder Izzy LaPerry (Beachwood, N.J.); 2-2. Sophomore catcher Camryn Kinney (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) gave Gwynedd Mercy University the edge with her single down the left field line; 3-2.
  • Focht (2-3) kept Marymount University off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh inning. She allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out one.
Griffin Highlights - Game Two
  • Gwynedd Mercy University was first to score in the game-two pitcher's duel. They did so on a wild pitch; using an error on a liner to left off the bat of senior center fielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) and a single to second base from freshman second baseman Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.) to line up the opportunity for the former to score; 1-0.
  • Schwartz was 3-for-3 in the suspended affair.
  • Baumeister stands with a chance to win it. She held the Saints to one run on five hits, while striking out three.
Gwynedd Mercy University is scheduled to continue their AEC schedule on Saturday, April 13, when they visit Centenary University (NJ) for a 12:00 p.m. twin bill.
