Union, N.J. - (4/8/2024) - With the first pitch of today's contest versus the Cougars pushed back for the solar eclipse, Gwynedd Mercy University (7-15) visited Kean University (15-11) for an evening affair. There, the Griffins scored the contest's first run on a Cougar error before giving way to the Kean University offense in an eventual 19-2 final. Sophomore right fielder
Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) was 2-for-3 with a run scored on an eighth-inning sacrifice fly from junior first baseman
Ricky Templeton (West Deptford, N.J.).
Griffin Highlights
- Bookend errors and a walk to junior designated hitter Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) factored into the Gwynedd Mercy University run in the first inning.
- The Griffins' next runner in scoring position came in the sixth inning with a one-out double from freshman shortstop Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.). But, the second Red and Gold run crossed the plate on Templeton's eighth-inning sacrifice fly.
- In addition to Junker and Haines (1-for-4), junior catcher Justin Smith (Broomall, Pa.) (1-for-3) recorded the other Gwynedd Mercy University hit with a two-out single in the fourth inning.
- Senior Giovanni D'Amore (Ambler, Pa.) was the only Griffin pitcher to hold the Cougars scoreless; he allowed three hits and two walks over three innings of relief.
Gwynedd Mercy University continues their non-conference schedule tomorrow, Tuesday, April 9, with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Lancaster Bible College.
