Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/27/2024) - Prior to this afternoon's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) twin bill with Immaculata University (14-20, 4-8), the Gwynedd Mercy University softball team gathered with the Read and Gold baseball team, the Mighty Macs, the Marywood University baseball team, the Genuardi Family, University President Deanne D'Emilio JD, Director of Athletic Keith Mondillo, the Voices of Gwynedd, and many other distinguished guests for the dedication of the Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball and Softball Fields. In the opener, a five-run fifth gave Immaculata University the runs they needed to outlast the Griffins an 8-4 end. Game two saw the Red and Gold grab a 3-0 lead before a four-run seventh gave the Mighty Macs the doubleheader sweep. Senior center fielder
Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) was 5-for-7 on the day; she was 3-for-3 with two runs in the opener.
Griffin Highlights - Game One
- Cordero led off the bottom of the first with a walk. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior left fielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.) and scored soon after on a single through the box from freshman second baseman Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.); 1-0.
- After Immaculata University's big inning, a single through the left side from senior third baseman Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) (2-5) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) narrowed the Might Mac lead to 5-3.
- In the fourth inning, a lead-off single from freshman designated player Cailin Via (West Deptford, N.J.), a sacrifice from junior right fielder Carly Maw (Bensalem, Pa.), and a bunt to third from Cordero gave the Griffins the chance to make it a one-run game; 5-4.
- In addition to Cordero, Scally recorded multiple hits (2-for-4).
Griffin Highlights - Game Two
- Gwynedd Mercy University took control of the contest with a three-run fourth inning. Schwartz singled to the pitcher and moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring the first Griffin run of the frame on a Scally single up the middle; 1-1. Two outs later, a single to right field from Maw plated two Griffins; 3-1.
- Cordero (2-for-4) and Scally (2-for-4) both recorded multiple hits.
Gwynedd Mercy University will serve as the #4 seed for the upcoming AEC Softball Championship Tournament and will be placed with #6 Cabrini University and host, #1 Centenary University (NJ) in POD A. Postseason competition starts on Friday, May 3; the Griffins are scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. contest versus the Cavaliers and a 4:00 p.m. contest versus the Cyclones.
