Hackettstown, N.J. (5/3/2024) - Fourth seeded Gwynedd Mercy University (16-25, 5-9) traveled to top seed Centenary University (N.J.) (27-12, 10-2) for POD A postseason competition of the 2024 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Softball Championship Tournament. The Griffins took on #6 Cabrini University (10-16, 4-8) in game one and the hosting Cyclones in game two; in game one, senior pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) started in the circle for the Red and Gold, but only went two innings with a final stat line of; 2IP, 9H, 7ER, 2BB, and 2K in the 10-5 loss (6-6). In game two, junior pitcher Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) tried to keep Gwynedd Mercy's season alive; she held the high-power Cyclones offense to only four runs, but the Griffins offense could not keep their end of the deal in an eventual 4-2 loss.
Griffin Highlights - Game One
- Gwynedd Mercy offense got off to a hot start as senior infielder Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a run-batted-in (RBI) single; 1-0. Senior infielder Ashley Haggerty (East Norriton, Pa.) hit a two-RBI to give the Griffins an early 2-0 lead.
- Cabrini scored nine unanswered runs, but in the bottom of the fourth inning sophomore catcher Camryn Kinney (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) stopped the bleeding with a single bringing home Baumeister; 4-9.
- Down 10-4 going into the final inning, sophomore shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.) singled home junior outfielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.); 10-5.
Griffin Highlights - Game Two
- With the number one seed getting off to 4-0 lead, the Red and Gold played from behind. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Scally singled to left field to drive in freshman second baseman Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.); 1-4.
- Down to the final out of the seventh inning, McDaid came up clutch with an RBI single to the shortstop; 4-2. But, Gwynedd Mercy could not bring home another run as the 2024 season came to an end with a grounder back the pitcher.
Gwynedd Mercy University finishes the 2024 season with a 16-25 overall record and a 5-9 AEC standing.
