Griffins Sweep Lions In Final Non-Conference Contest Of The 2024 Season

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. (4/24/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (16-19) played their final non-conference contest of the 2024 season as the Red and Gold welcomed Albright College (5-28) to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Field where the Griffins cruised to a 6-3 game one victory and used a sixth-inning rally to secure a 4-3 win in game two. Freshman pitcher Grace Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) pitched game one with a final stat line of (7IP, 6H, 3R, 2BB, 1K) in the win (2-1). Game two, junior pitcher Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) got the nod as she went seven full innings allowing six hits, three runs, walking three, and striking out four in the win (6-6).  

Griffin Highlights: 

Game One:  

  • The Lions got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Gwynedd Mercy would answer back with three of their own. Senior infielder Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a long double to center field bringing home senior utility player Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) and freshman infielder Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.) (2-1). The next batter sophomore shortstop Hannah Smith (Levittown, Pa.), hit the ball in the same spot, but instead, she ended up at third and gave the Griffins a 3-1 lead.  
  • The next inning with the bases loaded, junior outfielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.) worked a good at-bat and walked making the score 4-1. Schwartz as the next batter put the bat on the ball and reached on a fielder's choice with sophomore outfielder Kiersten Reeser (Warminster, Pa.) scoring (5-1).  
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Scally got her third run-batted-in (RBI) of the game with a single up the middle and the eventual 6-3 victory. 

Game Two:  

  • A wild pitch in the first inning allowed Cordero to score and get to an early 1-0 lead over Albright, but the offense would go quiet for the next five innings.  
  • With just the bottom of the sixth and seventh to go and the Griffins trailing 3-1 the Red and Gold would not go away quietly. Two errors from the Lions' second baseman in the bottom of the sixth allowed three runs to score and give the Griffins a 4-3 victory.  
  • With the sweep over Albright College, Gwynedd Mercy went 11-14 in non-conference play.  

Gwynedd Mercy University plays host to Immaculata University for the team's season finale on Saturday, April 27, for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
