Horner Records Three Hits, Knocks in Two in Loss to Highlanders

Langhorne, Pa. - (4/23/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (9-23) got on the scoreboard first in today's game at Cairn University (23-13) thanks to a two-run triple to right center from freshman shortstop Ryan Horner (Cinnaminson, N.J.) (3-for-5) in the fourth inning; 2-0. Unfortunately, the Highlanders cut the Griffin lead in half in the bottom of the frame (2-1) and scored four runs in the fifth inning (2-5) to cushion an eventual 9-4 final. A sacrifice fly from freshman catcher Ryan Schultz (Westmont, N.J.) scored Horner as the third Red and Gold run in the sixth inning (3-5) and sophomore center fielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) singled him home in the eighth inning to score the fourth (4-6).

Griffin Highlights
  • A one-out single from junior first baseman Ricky Templeton (West Deptford, N.J.) reached in the fourth inning with a one-out single through the box. He moved to second on a beaming of senior right fielder/catcher Nick Price (Levittown, Pa.) and scored before him on Horner's triple to right center; 2-0.
  • After a big fifth inning for Cairn University, the Griffin cut into their 5-2 lead with a one-out double from Horner, a wild pitch, and Schultz's sacrifice fly; 5-3.
  • In the eighth, Horner led off with a double to left field and scored soon after on Nodeland's pinch hit single up the middle; 6-4.
  • In addition to Horner, sophomore outfielder Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) (2-for-4) and freshman third baseman Dalton McDonald (Cinnaminson, N.J.) (2-for-4) recorded multiple hits for the Red and Gold.
Gwynedd Mercy University returns to their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) season schedule on Friday, April 25, when they visit Marywood University for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
