Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/22/2024) - Freshman Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) was impressive versus Penn State Schuylkill (20-12) in game one as she allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out six in her fifth win (5-6) of the season. In support, Gwynedd Mercy University (14-19) got three runs on four hits including a two-run double in the sixth inning from freshman second baseman Avery Schwartz (Collegeville, Pa.). Game two was tied 1-1 after two innings and 2-2 after five, but in the seventh inning the Nittany Lions plated two runs for an eventual 4-2 win. Senior center fielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with a run, while senior third baseman Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) (1-for-4) and Schwartz (1-for-3) respectively knocked in Red and Gold runs with a single in the first inning (1-0)and a double in the third (2-1). Senior Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) took no decision, but held Penn State Schuylkill to two runs on nine hits, while striking out one over 6.0 innings of work.

• Murphy and her Penn State Schuylkill counterpart dealt zeros through the first four frames. Gwynedd Mercy University broke the silence with a run in the fifth; freshman second baseman Cailin Via (West Deptford, N.J.) led off with a double down the left field line, a sacrifice bunt from freshman catcher Maya Hellyear (Quakertown, Pa.) moved her to third, and a grounder to second from junior first baseman Shannon McLaughlin (Haddon Heights, N.J.) scored her; 1-0.
• The Griffins added some insurance runs in the sixth inning thanks to a lead off walk to Cordero, a bunt single from junior left fielder Ally McDaid (Maple Glen, Pa.), a McDaid steal, and Schwartz's double down the right field line; 3-0.

• Gwynedd Mercy University scored a run in their first at-bat of game two with a lead off single from Cordero, a sacrifice from freshman left fielder Izzy LaPerry (Beachwood, N.J.), and Scally's two-out single to left field; 1-0.
• The Griffins took the lead again in the third inning thanks to a lead-off walk to Via, a Cordero sacrifice, a wild pitch, and a two-out double down the right field line from Schwartz; 2-1.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Softball Field on Wednesday, Apriul 24, when they host Albright College for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
