Scranton, Pa. - (4/17/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (0-12, 0-4 AEC) traveled to Marywood University (8-7, 4-1 AEC) in search of their first win in not only the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) but also in the 2024 season. Both teams traded goals early in the first quarter (13:12, 12:54), but a 9-2 goal advantage after quarter one would be too much for the Red and Gold to overcome as the Griffins would fall 26-12 to the Pacers. Junior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) finished with a team-high five goals on nine shots. Avellino also tied a season-high four caused turnovers, as well as three groundballs and one draw control.  

Griffin Highlights: 

• Both seniors Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.) and Caroline Cleary (Chalfont, Pa.) both finished with a multi-goal game. The former finished with four goals and three assists, while the latter finished with two goals and three assists.  
• Varilla made history in the contest as with her second assists in the first quarter (7:46) reached 186 career points putting her fifth all time in points. At the end of the second quarter with four seconds left, Varilla netted her second goal of the game giving her 150 career goals. 
• Marywood dominated not only the shot category but also the draw control category. The Pacers outshot the Griffins 46-29 and won 31 out of the 42 draw controls throughout the contest.  
• Freshman goalkeeper Nikki Williams (Cinnaminson, N.J.) made her third start of the season finishing with a career-high 11 saves on the season in the loss (0-4) 

Gwynedd Mercy University is back in action on Saturday, April 20, when the team travels to Neumann University for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
