Gynedd Valley, Pa. (4/16/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (10-15) played host to Penn State Abington (14-14) to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Field where the Red and Gold only registered five hits in the game one 2-0 loss. In game two, the script was flipped as two seniors started the contest with a bang. Seniors Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) and Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) both singled to left field earning them both their 100th career hit. The Griffins would split the doubleheader with a 4-2 victory in game two.
Griffin Highlights:
Game One:
- Gwynedd Mercy University's best offensive chance game in the bottom of the fifth as freshman second baseman Cailin Via (West Deptford, N.J.) hit a single to left field followed by a sacrifice bunt from junior infielder Shannon McLaughlin (Haddon Heights, N.J.) bringing Via into scoring position. Freshman outfielder Izzy LaPerry (Beachwood, N.J.) singled to first base putting Via on third with only one out. The bases would be loaded after senior utility player Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but no Griffins would cross home plate as the next two players recorded outs.
- Senior pitcher Ashley Haggerty (East Norriton, Pa.) pitched game one with a final stat line of (7IP, 8H, 2ER, 1BB, 1K) in the loss (0-3).
Game Two:
- Just like in game one, the Nittany Lions took an early 2-0 lead, but the resilience from the Red and Gold would come in full force in the bottom of the fifth. Scally would garner her third hit of the day with a three-runs-batted-in (RBI) double to center field bringing the score 3-2. Baumeister would then it into a groundout to the shortstop but allowed Scally to score and giving Gwynedd Mercy the final run in the contest (4-2).
- Junior pitcher Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, Pa.) started in the circle in game two with a final stat line of (7IP, 5H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 2K) in the win (3-5).
Gwynedd Mercy University will host Senior Day on Thursday, April 18, when the team hosts Stockton University for a doubleheader contest. Game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
