Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - (2/19/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (0-1, 0-0) opened its 2024 campaign with a trip to King's College (Pa.) (2-0, 0-1) Both senior attackers
Kristin Varilla (Lansdale, Pa.), and
Caroline Cleary (Chalfont, Pa.) finished with a team-high four points in the contest. The former totaled four goals on eight shots, while the latter finished with a new career-high four assists, three ground balls, and four draw controls. There was no shortage of offensive in the contest, as a total of 27 goals were scored, but it would be the Griffins that would fall 16-11 in the season opener.
Griffin Highlights:
- In her first collegiate game, freshman goalkeeper Victoria Sloan (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished with ten saves on 26 shots in the loss (0-1).
- Freshman midfielder Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) had an impressive start to her freshman season. Gordon finished with her first goal with 4:42 left in the first quarter and her second with just 2:15 left in the first half. Gordon also recorded one ground ball and two draw controls.
- Freshman attack Gianna Papa (Stratford, N.J.) recorded the first goal of her young career in the third quarter (13:54). Papa also recorded a ground ball and a draw control.
- The Griffins did an excellent job in the defensive zone with their clears as they were 9-of-10 (90%).
Gwynedd Mercy University will play its first home game on Saturday, February 24th, when they host Delaware Valley University for a 12:00 p.m. faceoff.
