Lions Setback Griffins in Season Opener

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (2/21/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (0-1) welcomed Albright College (2-1) to the Athletic Complex for today's season opener. The Griffins forged an early 5-1 (3:21) lead with the first Red and Gold goal in the career of sophomore Josh Devine (Pottstown, Pa.). Unfortunately, the Lions cut the deficit to three goals, 5-2 (0:05), by the end of the first quarter and led 7-6 (3:38) at halftime before distancing for an eventual 14-11 (2:01) final. Four Griffins recorded at least two goals; junior attack Richie Hughes (Turnersville, N.J.) led the group with three goals. Devine finished three points as he scored a second goal with 13:25 (8-6) remaining in the third quarter and assisted on a goal in the fourth quarter.

  • Hughes scored twice (10:20, 4:37) in Gwynedd Mercy University's opening 4-1 run; Devine provided the exclamation point with his first tally.
  • The Griffins were 17-of-27 on clears and grabbed 30 ground balls.

  • Junior attack Dominic Romania (Phoenixville, Pa.) matched Devine's total of three points; he scored his first goal with 9:40 (3-1) remaining in the first quarter and assisted senior attack Nick Flamma (Sewell, N.J.) with 13:56 remaining in the second quarter before scoring his fourth-quarter goa (13-10, 8:06). He also recovered three ground balls and caused a turnover.
  • Devine totaled a team-high 11 shots and recorded three ground balls in addition to his points.
  • Junior goalkeeper Jared Devine (Pottstown, Pa.) cleaned up around the cage with 16 saves and five ground balls.
