Griffins Advance to AEC Semifinals with Four-Set Win over #5 Pratt Institute

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (11/12/2024) - #4 Gwynedd Mercy University (17-10) stumbled out of the gate in this evening's Ayanna Gaston - 2,000 Career Assists - 11122024Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Women's Volleyball First Round match, but recovered from a 25-20 first-set loss with consecutive wins of 25-22, 25-15, 25-16 to dispatch #5 Pratt Institute from postseason play by a 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-16) final. The Red and Gold squeezed by the Cannoneers in the second set, using a late 4-1 run to emerge from a 21-21 tie. They found their footing in the third set, this time using mid-set run to emerge from a 11-10 deficit for a dominant 25-15 win. The fourth set played out similarly with Gwynedd Mercy University coming back from an 11-8 hole to put the Cannoneers to rest behind a 25-16 conclusion. Junior middle hitter Charlotte Pugh (Philadelphia, Pa.) (14.0 points; 8 kills, 4 aces, 1 solo block, and 2 block assists) and fifth-year outside hitter Bria Purnell (Reading, Pa.) (11.5; 9 kills, 2 aces, 1 block assist) both reached double-digit points for the Red and Gold.

Griffin Highlights
  • Gwynedd Mercy University saved their best for last as they hit .296 (10K-2E-27TA) in the fourth set. The performance left the Griffins' hitting .047 (35K-29E-129TA) for the match.
  • The Red and Gold recorded double-digit aces for the ninth time this season as they totaled 14 in the match. Junior defensive specialist Amanda Lopez (Houston, Texas) led the team with five service points.
  • Pugh totaled 14.0 points with eight kills, four aces, a solo block, and two block assists. She also recorded a team-high 17 digs.
  • Purnell's 11.5 points came from nine kills and a block assist. She also recorded an assist and 13 digs.
  • Junior setter Ayanna Gaston (Middletown, Del.) became the third player in Gwynedd Mercy University history to reach 2,000 career assists with her 30th of the match; she finished the affair with 31 assists. Gaston paired her assists with a kill, two aces, a block assist, four digs.
The AEC First Round victory advances #4 Gwynedd Mercy University to the league's semifinal round; they are now scheduled to visit #1 Marymount University on Thursday, November 14. The time of the opening serve is yet to be determined.
