Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (10/2/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-9) looked to bounce back after a hard-fought defeat at the hands of Randolph Macon College as the Red and Gold welcomed FDU-Florham (5-4) to the Athletic Complex for a non-conference matchup. Two minutes into the game, Gwynedd Mercy found the back of the net from sophomore midfielder Lillie Uttenreither (Bel Mair, Md.) netting her first career collegiate goal. Just over seven minutes later (9:38) the Devils answered, knotting the score to one apiece. The Griffins would prevail just under a minute later (10:15) when Gwynedd Mercy capitalized on a corner opportunity where senior midfielder Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) scored on a tipped shot from the top of the circle giving the Griffins a 2-1 lead. FDU again tied the score at 27:57 as both teams would go into the half-tied 2-2. The third quarter was a stalemate with neither team lighting the torch. In the fourth quarter, the Devils scored two unanswered goals taking a 4-2 lead (47:38) with just over ten minutes remaining in the contest. The Red and Gold did not go away quietly as the team answered back swiftly (53:31) with a beautiful pass from senior forward Ashley Berry (Philadelphia, Pa.) to senior defenseman Laura Filchner (Bath, Pa.) cutting the lead to one (4-3). Gwynedd Mercy was unable to find the equalizer and fell to FDU-Florham 4-3.  

Griffin Highlights:  

• Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Weaver (Flemington, N.J.) started her fourth consecutive game for the Griffins and finished with a career-high 14 saves in the loss (0-4).  
• Gwynedd Mercy only registered six shots and five penalty corners in the contest.  

Gwynedd Mercy University is back in action on Saturday, October 5 when the Griffins travel to Lebanon Valley College for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
